Over recent years, conversations with parents and professionals have highlighted an important concern. Across our community, we are seeing an increase in safeguarding issues and worrying behaviours linked to primary-aged children having unrestricted access to technology, smart devices, and social media apps.
Many parents have told us they would prefer to delay giving their child a smartphone but feel pressured because “everyone else is doing it,” making it difficult to say no.
At the same time, research at local, national, and international levels continues to underline the risks associated with children using smartphones too early—and some of these findings are deeply concerning. We believe it’s time to challenge the myths and misinformation that lead parents to feel they must provide a smartphone for their child.
We are working in partnership with other local primary and secondary schools, as well as our parent communities, to encourage the delayed use of smartphones. We are committed to 'Smartphone Free at KS1, 2 and 3' to help us achieve our goal.
On the 23rd September 2025, Bournside School hosted an event for parents, carers and education professionals to hear from guest speakers from PAPAYA, Smartphone Free Childhood and the University of the West of England. You can view the slides from the meeting below.
