EYFS Intent
The intent of our Early Years curriculum is to:
- Develop children’s love for learning.
- Create confident children who are physically and emotionally ready to learn.
- Enable children to communicate effectively.
- Support children to develop empathy and kindness.
- Recognise that children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates.
- Encourage curiosity, creativity and risk taking within all areas of learning.
- Encourage children to be brave enough to ask big questions.
- Develop unique children, who can be resilient, capable, confident and selfassured.
- Create a learning environment which responds to individual needs.
- Develop strong partnerships between practitioners and parents and/or carers.
- Provide opportunities for children to be constantly learning and engage in activities that are both adultinitiated and child-initiated.
Implementation
At Shurdington we provide;
- An exciting, balanced curriculum, across the seven areas of learning, using play as the vehicle for learning.
- A curriculum based on observation of children’s needs, interests and stages of development.
- Challenging learning experiences, based on the individual child, informed by observation and assessment.
- Equality of opportunity and antidiscriminatory throughout our practice and we work alongside parents/carers, colleges and external agencies to provide early intervention for those children who require additional support.
- A safe learning environment both indoors and out.
- Responsive adults, who support, guide and challenge children to follow their interests, ask questions and develop their thinking.
- Learning that is supported through the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning.
In the Early Years, we focus learning around children's interests. The provision is informed by our observations and conversations with children. Next steps in learning are based upon our observations of children’s independent practice which informs our planning.
Children engage in whole class and small group activities which increase the year progresses with time for a daily phonics session using ‘essential letters and sounds’, as well as, teaching aspects of Mathematics and Literacy, including shared reading and writing. The learning environment also evolves throughout the year to meet the needs of the children.
Impact
Our exciting and challenging curriculum enables children to achieve and exceed the Early Learning Goals which ensures they are ready for the stage of their school journey. Children engage in rich, meaningful first-hand experiences in which they explore think creatively and are active. Children within the early years become confident, independent learners and who are keen to be challenged and take risks.
Our classroom provides a stimulating, nurturing and multi-sensory environment which supports the children’s individual motivations, interests and needs. It is a purposeful space where children feel happy, secure and engaged. Our language-rich environment provides open-ended play opportunities where children are actively encouraged to work together to develop communication, language and social skills.
