History Intent
At Shurdington, we provide a high-quality history curriculum that has been carefully designed and sequenced to equip our children with a secure, coherent knowledge about local, British and world history. Curriculum content is knowledge, vocabulary and experience rich. The units of work are delivered in a sequenced, chronological order, allowing children to develop their understanding of substantive concepts and historical skills as they move through school. The history of our locality is woven into our history curriculum. It endeavours to ensure children are knowledgeable about their locality’s history and the changes it has seen. Our history curriculum promotes curiosity and a love for learning about the past. Through an enquiry-based approach, children are encouraged to ask and explore historically valid questions and report their findings by drawing on skills from across the curriculum. Alongside the development of substantive knowledge (the facts), children will develop their historical skills as they learn the fundamental elements of what it is to be a historian. Children will study a range of cultures and historical perspectives, enabling them to be respectful, tolerant and empathetic. Children will leave Shurdington being knowledgeable about key people, events and time periods from the past and will weave these together to form informed, overarching historical narratives.
History Implementation
History is taught weekly in three Half Term units across the year. Teachers will explicitly introduce each lesson as a history lesson. Each history unit will be supported by knowledge stems this is key knowledge that will be revisited on a weekly basis to ensure our children learn more and remember more. Each unit in our overview is underpinned by rich, substantive knowledge and ambitious vocabulary, whilst also ensuring children are developing their historical skills. Each unit of work has an emphasis on historical enquiry where children investigate historically framed questions. We have identified a set of key substantive concepts known as our ‘golden threads’, that the children will repeatedly revisit throughout their time at Shurdington in History and Geography. Our golden threads are: society and culture, trade and invention, settlement and place and climate and processes. Each unit may not include every 'thread', but over a year, children will visit each one more than once. Children will also have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills through museum visits, handling artefacts and engaging in workshops.

History Impact
Evidence of a balanced and wide-ranging History curriculum will be found in History books. They demonstrate that the children have acquired key knowledge in the topic taught. At the end of each enquiry, the answers will be presented. This could be as a presentation with a special guest, a class assembly, a written paragraph, an illustration or an audio recording. We believe that if children have become knowledgeable historians, then they will be able to articulate their understanding with confidence. This is why pupil voice is an important tool in assessing whether children have made progress. If a child is able to confidently formulate and explain their own responses to an overarching enquiry, then the curriculum and its delivery have been successful. To ensure children are knowing more and remembering more, children will take part in low stake quizzes throughout. We hope that the diverse way we teach History will inspire children to research topics they are interested in outside of the school environment through optional topic homework tasks. Visits to local sites of historical interest make the learning relevant to the children and spark curiosity in the local area which we aim to encourage families of the school to visit in their own time. Our History teaching provides our children with enjoyment and curiosity to explore and investigate the past throughout their life.
