Intent

As a school we hold PSHE as pivotal in our approach to our teaching, learning and building positive relationships in our school community.

We have been implementing PSHE lessons for many years. Whilst this remains a non-statutory subject it is of high value in our school. We have been implementing RSHE as part of whole school curriculum since 2018, which is now a statutory requirement.

The intent of our curriculum is to promote and improve the health and wellbeing of our children through better knowledge and enable them to make good life choices.

The intent of our PSHE and RSHE curriculum is to:

  • Empower children to make well-informed decisions about their wellbeing, physical and mental health and relationships.
  • To develop personal attributes such as resilience, self-esteem and risk management.
  • Prepare the children for the opportunities, experiences and responsibilities of life in modern Britain.
  • Teach children to form positive, safe, healthy and respectful friendships and relationships with others (including the online world). Teach children to recognise and manage unhealthy relationships by focusing on boundaries and privacy.
  • Introduce age-appropriate, inclusive learning about the emotional and physical aspects of growing up.
  • To empower children to be safe and safeguarded.

Implementation

Shurdington follow a whole-school approach with year-group specific learning to ensure coverage and progress over the Primary curriculum. The spiral curriculum is sequenced so that topics, themes and concepts are re-visited and previous knowledge is built upon.

The programme of study includes the key themes of; Valuing Difference, Being my Best, Me and My Relationships, Growing and Changing, Keeping Myself Safe and Rights and Responsibilities.

Lessons are time-tabled into class each fortnightly, these are further supported by circle time, coaching lessons and sharing discussions in classes.

We use the Conram Life Education SCARF programme and resources to plan and deliver the curriculum. We also include a rotation of visits, for example, local PCSO and fire service. Our school receive an annual visit from the Life Education bus and bi-annual visit from the NSPCC.

Our Shurdington Mile/Mini-mile programme ensures all children are physically active and experiencing an additional benefit of exercise for their physical and mental wellbeing. All children complete this activity daily.

Many of the areas of knowledge are linked to or integrated into other subjects across the curriculum, primarily, science, computing and PE.

Impact

Our children benefit from a strong ethos of values and virtues at Shurdington, both Christian and their personal ability to conduct themselves well and make informed choices.

Our Online Pupil Wellbeing Survey (2024) demonstrates that the Overall wellbeing of our pupils is in with county averages in terms of life satisfaction, happiness, feeling safe (at school), mental wellbeing and being taught about body changes, including puberty.

83.5% of our surveyed pupils reported good mental wellbeing.

91.1% of our surveyed pupils said they had a trusted adult to go to if they were worried about something.

89.9% of our surveyed pupils reported they felt confident about the future.

The ‘Personal development, behaviour and welfare’ of our school was judged as Good (OFSTED June 2019).

‘They learn to be responsible and tolerant citizens.’

‘The school promotes healthy lifestyles well and pupils are proud to represent their school at the many organised sporting festivals and competitions.
