All KS2 children are taught French in termly topics over their four years in KS2 using the Twinkl Planit scheme. The school follows a sequence so that prior learning is considered and opportunities for revision of language and grammar are built in. Lessons and resources help children to develop on prior knowledge alongside the introduction of new skills. Each session provides structure and context as well as offering an insight into the culture of French-speaking countries. Children are taught to listen attentively to spoken language and to show understanding by joining in and responding. The resources which we use contains audio materials by authentic French speakers. Stories, songs and rhymes are used to explore patterns and sounds of language as well as to link spelling and the meaning of words. Encouragement to engage in conversations, ask and answer questions, express opinions and develop accurate pronunciation and intonation will be provided. Children will be given the opportunity to practice familiar vocabulary and basic language structures before broadening their vocabulary and using a bilingual dictionary.
