Shurdington C of E Primary School has a good reputation for the teaching of Science, as stated in our Ofsted. It is important to maintain this level of quality teaching in Science.

Therefore, the intent of our Science curriculum is to:

• Ensure all children have regular opportunities to work scientifically, including experimentation
• Ensure all children have the balance between learning scientific skills and knowledge
• Allow children to combine their knowledge of Maths and English with Science
• Allow children to experience scientific enquiry outside of the classroom
• Develop children’s scientific vocabulary

By the end of Key Stage 1 our children will have covered the subject content of the National Curriculum by concentrating on plants, animals, including humans, everyday materials and their uses, seasonal changes, living things and their habitats and working scientifically.

By the end of Key Stage 2 our children will have covered the subject content of the National Curriculum by concentrating on: plants, animals, including humans, rocks, light, forces and magnets, living things and their habitats, states of matter, sound, electricity, properties and changes of materials, earth and space, evolution and inheritance and working scientifically.

The Science curriculum supports the following areas of our ‘Shurdington Experiences’ (agreed experiences we want all children to take part in before they leave our school):

• Sit around a campfire
• Feel good about themselves and feel proud
• Go to a woodland/Forest schools
